I’m so glad you’re here.
My name is Gilly Mathieson, and I’m a stage IV colorectal cancer survivor, with a story I never expected to tell.
Six years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer and told it was incurable. I went through chemotherapy and major surgeries, but the cancer kept coming back, in my liver and lungs, again and again. Immunotherapy wasn’t an option for my tumour type, and eventually, I ran out of options. What do you do when chemo doesn’t stop the cancer from returning?
For me, the answer came in an unexpected form: a cancer vaccine research study, a new direction when nothing else was left.
I believe that vaccine played a crucial role in turning things around. Today, my most recent scans show no evidence of disease, words I never thought I’d be able to say.
As a former BBC journalist, I’ve returned now to storytelling, not for the headlines, but for the hope. I’m on a global journey to investigate the science that helped save my life, and to explore what these vaccines could mean for others.
